The Creation Story In the Bible

Bible stories - Creation

The Creation story in the Bible is primarily found within Genesis chapters 1-2, but John 1 and Colossians 1 also contain important facts as well as other Bible verses which connect to the story of creation.

Facts about God are found here and are important for us and children to understand.

  • God has always existed, and He has always existed as God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Even at creation He says, "Let Us make man in Our image. Jesus as God was there creating at the beginning. (John 1; Colossians 1)
  • God created everything out of nothing.
  • God created us to know Him and have a relationship with Him.  He did not create the world and then step back to just watch.  He is involved in our lives.

In the beginning...

In the beginning before time and space,

Before anything was created, there wasn't a trace,

But God was here.

He was and is and will always be

Father, Son, Spirit - all Three.

God is near.

The Creation Story in the Bible from Genesis:

The creation story is first found in the very beginning of the Bible in Genesis chapters one and two.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.  Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.  God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.  god called the light day, and the darkness He called night.  And there was evening and there was morning, one day."  - Genesis 1:1-5 NASB

- Genesis chapters 1-2 continued

Interesting facts you may not have seen before from the creation story in the Bible include:

  • In Genesis 1, the Hebrew name for God used is Elohim.  It is plural of the most used Hebrew word for God - El.  It causes us to see God as Creator God.
  • But in Genesis 2, the Hebrew name for God is Yahweh also translated Jehovah; you may have heard of this name.  It is God's personal name He gives to Moses from the burning bush (Exodus ); it means "I AM" and is seen in our English translations as LORD (all capitals).  This name points to God as a relational God who knows us and wants to be known by us.
  • Chapter 1 gives us the days of creation listed.  Chapter 2 gives more detail into the creation of humans and focuses on the relationship of man with the world and with God.
  • John 1 reveals that Jesus participated in the creation story in the Bible.  It tells us "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and was God.  He was in the beginning with God. "All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being." (vs.1-3). We understand the Word was Jesus because in John 1:14 it tells us - "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."
  • In Colossians 1:16, Paul writes:  "For by Him (Jesus) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things have been created through Him and for Him."
  • Hebrews 11:3 says, "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what is visible."
  • A few other Bible verses which touch on the Creation story include: Psalm 8:3-9, Psalm 33:6, Romans 1:20, 1 Corinthians 8:6, and Revelation 4:11.

creation story in the Bible

Below is a  paraphrased version I wrote based on Genesis 1:

In the beginning...the Creation Story in the Bible

Before there was anything...there was God.  You may know Him. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; yet He is the One and Only God.

We really can't understand how that is, but it's okay because He knows.  And we can trust Him.

He was here before time or space.  He has and always will be.

He decided to create something VERY special; so He spoke.  He said "Let there be light", and there was!  He created everything out of nothing!

He made the earth, the sky and the sea. He made the sun, the moon and the stars.  He made the grass, the trees and the flowers.  He made the fish, the birds, and all the other animals.

It only took God six days to make all that you see, all that you hear, all that you smell, all that you taste and all that you touch! And He said, "It is good!"

But even after making all these wonderful creations, He still had something even MORE special to make.  He made man and He made woman.  And He said they were "very good"!

They were different from anything else God made.  God made them in His own image.  They were made to be like a picture of God, to look like Him, to be like Him just as we are.

He gave them all creation to enjoy!  All, that is except one single tree.

Then God rested on the seventh day.

Bible Story Thoughts & Activities:

Q & A...Things to think about

  1. Who was in the beginning? - The answer God, is correct, but also name the three persons of God.  Children as well as adults need to know that Jesus was there in the beginning as God creating with the Father and the Holy Spirit.  (John 1; Colossians 1)
  2. What did God create? - Everything!  Name something God created that you can see..hear...smell...taste...or  touch.   Out of what did God create everything? Only God can create something from nothing.   (Hebrews 11:3) Remind them that what God created was good and He made all of it for us to enjoy.

Order of Creation

Creation Bible Story

Something we learn about God through the story of His creation is that God is a God of order.  Use this  mini-color book from Bible Story Printables to show God's order in the creation story:

On days 1-3 God divided or separated:

  • Day 1 - Light from Darkness
  • Day 2 - Sky (waters above) from the Sea (waters below)
  • Day 3 - Sea from the Land (which sprouted with plants)

On days 3-6 then He filled each:

  • Day 4 - Filled the sky with lights (sun, moon, stars)
  • Day 5 - Filled the sky with birds & sea with fish
  • Day 6 - Filled the land with animals & created man/woman

  • Day 7 - God rested

Bible Object Lesson - In God's IMage

Use this Christian object lesson to teach how we are not only created in God's image, but our lives should also reflect His image each and every day.

Excerpt:

The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:27 - "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

Ask if anyone knows what an "image" is. Accept varied answers and comment positively on them so kids will continue to participate.

Have the following definition to summarize and clarify the meaning of "image."

The dictionary gives this definition: "a physical likeness or representation of a person, animal, or thing, photographed, painted, sculptured, or otherwise made visible."

Take a picture of someone in the group with a digital camera or bring a photo of someone most everyone will recognize like a famous person.

Ask them if the photo or "image" is actually that person. Of course it's not. The image can't speak, think, etc., but it does show a lot about the person and what they are like.

In the same way, we are created in the "image of God." We are NOT God, but created to be like Him and reflect what He is like.

We try to check others' faith statements and make sure they do profess Jesus Christ as God's Son and salvation is found only in Him. It must, however, be your responsibility to personally dig into God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to be your first and final teacher on all subjects.
