Holy Spirit Object Lesson with Glue
we can't see the Holy Spirit, but He makes us stronger!

This Holy Spirit object lesson for kids is both interactive and encouraging. When glue dries, it strengthens the item it is on even though it cannot be seen. The Bible tells us over 365 times we do not need to be afraid because God is with us by His Holy Spirit.  We find strength in Him.

We also have a full Bible lesson which includes this object lesson.

Holy Spirit object lesson

Topic: God Strengthens Us by His Holy Spirit

Object Lesson Title: Invisible Strength

Object:  Glue

Bible Verses:  Ephesians 3:16

Key Takeaway:  We do not have to fear when we trust in Jesus.  We may not be able to see Him, but His strength is with us through His Holy Spirit.

Bible Verses:

Ephesians 3:16-17 - "I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. " NLT

Object Lesson Prep:  Sometime before the lesson have items already coated and strengthened with glue such as string, yarn, fabric, magazine photo, etc.  Also have a sample of each item without the glue coating for comparison.

Introduction:

To introduce this Holy Spirit object lesson, take a few minutes to talk about the strongest people students may know such as their dads, brothers, pro football players, policemen, military, etc.

Have two students volunteer to arm wrestle.  After one wins, have them try again and this time you help the student that lost before.

Tell them that today we will be learning about how God comes alongside us and strengthens us by His Holy Spirit.

Story of Samson

Ask if students know who Samson was in the Bible.  Have them tell what they know; then ask what made Samson so strong?  After several answer, read Judges 14:5-6 -

"As Samson and his parents were going down to Timnah, a young lion suddenly attacked Samson near the vineyards of Timnah. At that moment the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn’t tell his father or mother about it."

Ask again what made Samson strong until someone answers - "the Spirit of the LORD."

Briefly mention that in the Old Testament, God's Holy Spirit would be with people for a time, but not stay with them forever.  After Jesus died and rose again though, we can have the Holy Spirit with us always when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  He never leaves us.

Holy Spirit Object Lesson:

Show students the two pieces of string or yarn (one regular and one coated with glue).  Which is stronger? Do the same with the other items.  Then ask what makes the one stronger than the other.  Some may know it's glue, but ask if they can see the glue or just feel it.

Ask them to think of other things that they can feel but not see.  Examples are the wind, gravity, sound vibrations, etc.  Like the glue these can't be seen, but they are powerful and strong.  Just because we can't see them, doesn't make them any less real or less powerful.

God's Holy Spirit can not be seen, but the Bible says that He is with Jesus' followers and strengthens them.

Invisible strength object lesson

Have everyone turn to Ephesians 3:16-17 -

"I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong." NLT

Over and over in the Bible God tells us He will be with us so we do not have to fear or be afraid.  When we use glue or feel the wind or think about gravity, let it remind us that His Holy Spirit is with us to strengthen us and we are not alone.  We may not be able to see Him, but we can see His power and feel His presence.

Optional:  Paper Mache' Bowls

Paper Mache

Paper mache is messy, but such a fun craft to help students remember this Holy Spirit object lesson on His strengthening power and presence.

Items needed:  balloons, glue thinned with water in bowls, paint brushes, strips of newspaper, paint and or strips of fabric.

Instead of making this two steps, you can have kids tear colored paper or tissue paper to make a colorful bowl without paint or fabric.

Mix  enough glue and water in equal proportions to have enough for students.

Blow up balloons to normal size and tie.  Give each student a balloon, a container of glue mixture and a paint brush.

Have them use glue mixture to cover the bottom half of the balloon with the strips of newspaper to make 2-4 layers thick.  Make sure all the paper is well covered with glue. (Hint: adding a little salt to your mixture will help it not mold.)

Hang balloons with a string to dry at least overnight.

Once dry, have students pop their balloon and they will be left with a bowl to paint or cover with fabric strips and glue mixture again for decoration.

Glue Bookmark

Another fun craft and possibly a little less messy is making a glue bookmark!  Here are the instructions from Instructables.

We try to check others' faith statements and make sure they do profess Jesus Christ as God's Son and salvation is found only in Him. It must, however, be your responsibility to personally dig into God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to be your first and final teacher on all subjects.
