Dec. 1st - a Road - John 14:6

“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

One of my favorite roads to walk down is way out in the country where my grandparents lived.  It is a quiet gravel road with the trees almost touching above and having sprinkled their leaves across its dirt path.

There are all types of roads which can take us to many different destinations.  Some are paved and crowded with cars speeding by.  Others are quiet and peaceful, but can become muddy when it rains. Roads are a lot like life.

Think about all the roads you will go down today; each one leads to a different destination.   Sometimes we may get wrong directions and go down a wrong road never reaching the destination we desire.

In the Old Testament God spoke through the law and the prophets; they pointed to the coming of the Messiah, a Savior.  They gave directions.  God knew we would still make wrong turns though; that’s why from the beginning of time Jesus planned to come to earth in human flesh to not only show us the way, but to be the Way.

Here in John 14:6, Jesus says He is the way, the only way, to God the Father.  To the world, that may sound very narrow minded, but in reality, it is a relief!  What if all roads in life led to the same location; it would be both confusing and frustrating.

Today as you travel, cross, or see different roads, let them cause you to ponder on the Spiritual road you are traveling in life.  Are you trusting Jesus as your Savior, as your way back to God the Father Who is in Heaven?  If not, let today be the beginning of your journey with Him! Turn back to God and invite Jesus to be your Savior and Way.

If you already are a follower of Christ, then today be joyful and overflowing with gratitude so that you can share with others this Good News of the Way that leads to true life!  Invite others to join you on this Jesus Journey!

Christmas Devotion Teaching Activities

Share this Christmas devotion with your family and use one of the following activities for fun!

Map out your own road

Materials needed:  masking tape or painter's tape; small toy cars; poster or sheet of paper with Heaven or God written on it; markers or pens.

Place your "destination" poster somewhere in the room.  Give each child the chance to take a roll of tape to make a road from where they are to the poster.  Ask them what ways people may say can get you to heaven or to God. (Answers may include being good, giving to the church, being a part of a Christian family, etc.)  Talk about what Jesus said in John 14:6.  Depending on their ages, either write for them or let them write, Jesus along their tape.  Older children may even  want to write the whole verse along theirs.  Allow them time to move their toy cars along their roads reminding themselves the only way to Heaven & God is through Jesus.

Take a Ride

If you're using this object lesson with your family, take a ride in the car.  Have the kids give you directions to your destination (a park, grandparent's home, ice cream place, church, etc.) or draw a map to it for you to follow.  See if everyone gives the same directions.  As you travel discuss that although there may be different routes to your destination, according to Jesus Himself, there is only one way to Heaven & God the Father.

Follow the Leader

Have different children give you directions to their house.  Discuss how sometimes directions can be complicated, hard to remember and confusing.  Jesus didn't leave anything to chance.  Instead of just giving us directions to Heaven & God, He came that we can just follow Him to that eternal destination!

Take some time playing Follow the Leader and reminding them that Jesus is the only One to follow that can lead us to God the Father.

We try to check others' faith statements and make sure they do profess Jesus Christ as God's Son and salvation is found only in Him. It must, however, be your responsibility to personally dig into God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to be your first and final teacher on all subjects.
