Having the Mind of Christ - Keeping a Healthy Mind

The mind of Christ.. In 1 Corinthians 2:16 Paul focuses on the change that has been made in a believer's life because we have received God's Holy Spirit.  This change affects everything about us including our minds!

Romans 8:6 says:  "For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace."

I don't know about you, but I really would rather life and peace than death!

1 Corinthians 2:16 says: "For: who has known the Lord's mind, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ."

God's Word speaks a great deal about our minds and thoughts giving important instruction on how to keep a healthy mind that will glorify Him:

Isaiah 26:3 - "You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You."

Colossians 3:2 - "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth."

Romans 12:2 - "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

These are but a few Bible verses that speak about the importance of keeping our minds focused on God.  Having the mind of Christ allows us to know God's thoughts, understand His Word!  His Holy Spirit has become our teacher, but we must make ourselves attentive learners!

If you're a worry-wart like me, you may need the lesson taught in Philippians 4:6-8!  God tells us to be anxious for nothing, but by taking everything including our concerns & worries to Him in prayer, He will guard our hearts & minds in Christ Jesus! He gives us the mind of Christ, a mind focused on Him and His goodness! Then He tells us to focus our minds on Him by thinking about good things - whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure & lovely, etc.  Please go read it!

5 Ways to Keeping a Healthy Mind

With the instruction of the above Scriptures, let's look at 5 easy ways we can practice keeping our minds healthy by focusing on Jesus:

1)   Read His Word

Open your Bible and read God’s Truth!  You may be studying something in particular, using a devotional to lead you, or sometimes I randomly open His Word to a highlighted or marked verse and begin there!

2)   Notice His Creation

Take a few steps outside or look out your window.  Notice all the things our Creator has designed just for us!

3) Acknowledge His Presence

Close your eyes for 3 minutes and try to block out distractions.  Let your mind think about your Savior.  Picture Him in your mind right beside you!

4)   Count Your Blessings

Name them one by one!  It’s amazing how focusing on the blessings God has given us and being thankful can turn our focus back to praising our King!

5)  A-Z, God Loves Me!

Write the alphabet vertically down a sheet of paper.  For each letter write a word or thought that relates to God Almighty.  Ex: A - Alpha (He is the Alpha & Omega- the Beginning & the End), B – bond servant (He has bought me with a price; I will serve Him out of love), C – Creator (all things came into being by Him), D - David (He helped David conquer giants; He will help me too!), E - encourager (He encourages me everyday), etc.

Our thoughts affect our emotions & actions!  We must be careful of the thoughts we allow our minds to entertain.  Yes, thoughts may seem to appear out of nowhere sometimes, but we have a choice of whether to allow our minds to dwell on them or turn our focus back to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith! (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Let all thoughts point to Jesus, and we’ll keep a healthy mind!

Of course the first step is to accept Christ as our Lord & Savior, to allow Him to change us!  If you don't know Jesus and how real He is, learn more about having the mind of Christ and having a personal relationship with Him!
